My Engagement Story & Shopping for Dresses

My Engagement Story & Shopping for Dresses

January 17, 2018

This post is in collaboration with and sponsored by David's Bridal. As always, all opinions are honest and my own.

When it comes to engagements, I know almost nothing about them. Mainly because none of my close friends had been engaged before. I didn't have anything to judge an engagement off of, when it came down to it. Engagement was a magical fairytale, for me.

This is a close up of me looking back through a veil wearing a beautiful wedding dress from David's Bridal.

The Engagement Story

Our engagement is a bit different from many. We weren't up in a hot air balloon, we weren't with our family or friends, and we weren't doing anything super cliche. We were driving up a fjord in the middle of Norway, and we had been driving all day. It rained all day. After all that driving in the dreary weather, we were tired and it was Aaron who suggested we stop and pull off to the side of the road. He was a fan of having a picnic off to the side of the water, along the water. After the rain subsided, we noticed a rainbow as we drove through a lot filled with several businesses. Mandalen, Norway. I just took a peek at a webcam in Mandalen, and the weather definitely changes the look of the spot we got engaged in; no doubt about that.

It's been several months since our trip to Norway, and that magical rainy day driving up the fjord. I still think about the setting, and how it all came together perfectly. After the engagement, the question every asked was "when is the wedding?" That's been the instant question, which I guess means no one can think of anything original to ask. Why not "where do you think you'll have it?" or "any ideas on the dress?" but it's always "when is the wedding?" and "how many people are invited?"

Well step is picking a place. Destination or at home? I'll keep this one a secret, because today is all about dresses.

As soon as I walked into David's Bridal, I was welcomed and greeted into the store. They asked if I had an appointment or needing help browsing. Luckily, I did have an appointment scheduled so they got me situated right away and introduced me to my changing room.

I was measured in the first few minutes, and my stylist and I talked about the styles I adore. In addition, I showed her my Pinterest board so she could see some inspiration from over the years. We all seem to change our minds in various scenarios, whether it's because we're 23, or we end up meeting someone and our style changes, but I showed her a reel of all the various Pinterest ideas I've had over the past 5 years. In addition to that, I had some wedding dress inspiration. I have a feel for classy and chic, but not extravagant or ball gown style. I don't want to do it over the top, as that's not who I am.

As we tried on four dresses at David's Bridal, understand that I am not "loud" about most things so these dresses would need a bit of alteration simply because they're not modest enough for me. I want to keep it much simpler.

This is an Oleg Cassini design. The top of this dress really suits me, and it's classy. It's truly along the lines of what I'm looking for; however, the bottom (skirt) portion is just a bit too much for me. I want this skirt to be much less poofy, and I want less layers. With this particular dress, it seemed possible to shed a few layers to make it the dress that I want.

When it comes down to it, I love the lacey top middle or full sleeve because I like that classy element to the dress. While I love my arms, and I do want to flaunt them, there's something so classy and beautiful about this top and covering the arms in lacey material.

This is a full body shot of a very intricate detailed dress, with lace detailing.

After trying on the first two dresses, I was really happy with the results. Something I noticed as I walked around a few corners of the store, was that there was a discount section for dresses under $100 (what a deal!)

Needless to say, there were hundreds of options and after looking through a detailed bride book, I was able to narrow down to my specific preferences for a wedding dress.

Have you tried on wedding dresses before? Was David's Bridal part of your dress try-on?

Congratulations on your engagement, how exciting! When I was in my cousin’s wedding we went to David’s Bridal and they were fabulous. I would definitely recommend them to anyone!

You have some beautiful story and what a journey to be on. Congratulations. I like the third to last one the best on you. So pretty!

1st congrats on your engagement and upcoming wedding. I have not tried on wedding dresses yet dont want to jinx myself but both of my bridesmaid dresses came from David’s Bridal!

My brother got married last year and all wedding and bridesmaids dresses came from David’s bridal, it is an amazing store

I got my dress at David’s Bridal! And I’ve also gotten my bridesmaid dress for my friends wedding there! They are the perfect place to shop – not only for weddings, but I know a few who’ve shopped there for Prom.

Both of the dresses look great on you! Wedding dress shopping is exciting but I also found it overwhelming. I went through it last year and I will say from experience, picking a couple must-have style elements will definitely help narrow things down! Good luck with all your planning and just ignore all the questions!! 🙂

You look gorgeous girly!! I can’t wait to see what you picked for the big day!! I have tried on bridesmaid dresses at David’s! Does that count?? I have always loved David’s, they have styles and price points to meet every body and budget!

Great engagement story, travel and romance is my favorite combination. I haven’t tried on wedding dresses yet but it’s always been an exciting prospect for the future.

Your enggagement story is so wonderful. Looks like David’s Bridal can give us such an amazing design of a wedding gown. The first wedding gown photo is stunning.

You look absolutely stunning! I remember when I got married many years ago, it was tough to find beautiful wedding dresses like they have today!

The only thing I know about Wedding Dress Shopping was going shopping with my half-sister. She didn’t even tell me, and she didn’t bring her mom or her full sister so it was a bit tense when we got back, I wish she would have warned me first, she felt I would be the most objective and honest. Which I appreciate but I wish she would have invited everyone. Wishing you happiness on your big day!

What a beautiful experience – weddings are such fun celebrations. I loved seeing all the different styles on you. You are going to make for one beautiful bride!

Those dresses are all beautiful! I got my dress from David’s Bridal back in 2004. It was such a fun experience, I went with friends and we had such a good time. They have lots of great dresses there.

So fun!! I did and had a great experience. I found the selection a bit overwhelming so going in with a style in mind and having an assistant helped so much.

CONGRATS girl!! First of all, you look amazing in these. Dress shopping can be overwhelming, but once you narrow down the general style, it helps! I’m totally in love with you in the strapless option!

Oh How I loved trying on the wedding dresses for my wedding. I know what fun you ha. Enjoy your big day. You’ll make a beautiful bride and your groom is one lucky guy! Congrats!

My husband and I will be celebrating our tenth anniversary soon and David’s Bridal was a big part of our day. A matron of honor, three bridesmaids, two junior bridesmaids, and three flower girls… all wearing different styles of dresses from David’s Bridal! BEST WISHES!

So happy for you! I have not had the chance to ever go dress shopping. It looks like it would have been so much fun! The dresses you tried on are gorgeous.

First of all congratulations and thank you for sharing your experience. I love everything about weddings so stories like these really tickle my fancy!

Engagements are definitely different for everyone. Sounds like yours has been amazing and that moment you say yes to the dress is always memorable.

Oh wow I just loved hearing how you too got engaged. You looked beautiful in all the different dress. I just adore the Oleg Cassini one. I’ve been to David’s bridal for my bridesmaid fitting, and she randomly was convinced to try on a few bridal dress and she found hers after her second one.

You may not have been up in a balloon, but Norway has it’s own magic! I am so short that altering a dress cost almost as much as a dress itself. I ended up buying my dress on eBay and having it altered. You look beautiful

Trying on dresses and saying YES to the dress was so much fun! Enjoy your engagement and the wedding planning process!

xo, Sara

I ended up buying my wedding dress at Davids Bridal. I kinda knew what I wanted before I went in there. I was considering buying a dress online but I was so afraid that it wouldn’t fit right.

I love the last dress on you. Hopefully you won’t have to have it altered. My dress was expensive when it came to alterations. I still almost tripped on my wedding day because it was still a bit too long.
