Recent Reads I Recommend

August 12, 2019

I’ve been a bookworm for as long as I can remember. As a kid, my backpack used to weigh heavy on my shoulders when as I carried around big books like Harry Potter and Twilight. For me, reading has always been a way to unplug and escape from reality.

For a while, I lost my interest in reading. I still paroled the book section at Target in hopes to find a great book, but nothing spoke to me for over a year. It wasn’t until I came across Reese Witherspoon’s book club with Hello Sunshine on Instagram, that I decided I was going to read one of the books from her list. That book was called, The Love We Lost

I still get chills when I think about this book. It was a quick read, I purchased it a day before I left for a trip and finished it two days later. The book was beautifully written and filled with reminders of how unpredictable life can be. It was beautifully tragic and I only wish it didn’t end.

Since that trip last April, I’ve added books to my collection left and right. While the characters in the book lost their light, it certainly sparked my light for reading back up, and I want to share some of my favorites with you!

Big Little Lies - I loved the book and I loved the show. I think it shows the incredible strength of women and the importance of friendship. If you haven’t read or seen it, 10/10 recommend!

Crazy Rich Asians -  I’m sure you’ve heard by now, but the books are always better than the movie. This is incredibly accurate in this case. There were so many fun details I was bummed to see didn’t make the cut into the movie. Reading this series was so much fun because I learned something in each chapter, whether it was the language, various dishes, and meals, or more about the culture I knew more putting the book down than I did picking it up. My goal for 2019 was to learn something new each day and this helped me check that box for a few weeks.

In A Dark, Dark Wood- I actually had someone escort me to my car one night because this book put me that on edge. I finished this thriller in a weekend, I was eager to know what happened and wanted to sleep better at night LOL. When I picked this up a while back, there was a sticker that said “soon to be a major motion picture”, if anyone in production is reading this- I’m over here waiting!

Tweak and Beautiful Boy - These true stories were completely devastating for me, as they shared two perspectives on addition. Tweak was about a boy named Nic, who shared his addiction to methamphetamines, which was graphic and heartbreaking. There were points I had to set the book down and get my mind off it. Beautiful Boy was from his father’s point of view and demonstrated an honest reality that many with a loved one with an addiction face.

Tell Me Lies - The fun and feminine writing in this book made me feel like I was hearing a story from a friend. This book felt so real to me and made for such a great summer read!

Where The Crawdads Sing - This was another book club recommendation from Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Bookclub. I got really lost in this book because the descriptions made me feel like I was there in it.

The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes - The first time I read this was years ago, my mom got it on the first edition kindle and let me read it there. To this day, I still recommend it to people who are trying to get into reading, because I’m sure it’ll do the trick. It’s filled with so many crazy turns, conflicts, and surprises. It’s like one of the stories you’d hear on a Dateline episode and think, no way. It shares the story of a woman in love, a choice she makes that will forever haunt her, and the obstacles she faces for years to come as a mother, wife, and woman grieving what happened one terrible night. This is a GOOD one!

Right now, I’m reading All the Wonderful and Ugly Things. There are several different viewpoints and stories shared and I have absolutely no idea where this book is going to take me because the description and what I’ve read in the first 100 pages seem totally different... but I’m excited to see where it goes!

Do you remember the book that sparked your love for reading? Which book have you read lately that has completely consumed you?

It seems you are packed and ready to read. Classic dress, tea, good chair and interesting books are delightful. Great choices.

Thank you so much for sharing your list of must reads! I am an avid reader and always on the lookout for a new good book. Definitely picking up a few of these 🙂

These are definitely some of my favorites, you’ll have to check them out. I love switching up genres, so there’s some variety here!

I dont actually have the time to sit and read books which is really sad. This however, looks like a wide range of books for any book lover to read.

Where the Crawdads Sing and All the Ugly and Wonderful Things are two of my favorite recent reads in the last few years. They are so well written and the characters are so interesting. I also like Little Fires Everywhere and Daisy Jones and the Six.

I love reading but is is very hard to find the time to really enjoy a good book. I will pick one of these from your list and find the time to relax and enjoy it. Becoming Michelle Obama was my last read and I enjoyed it a lot!

I enjoy reading books as well. Is like living other lives, other dimensions, other times… I just got Crazy Rich Asians and I haven’t watched the movie, because I want to read it first. In a Dark, Dark Wood sounds really interesting. Thrillers are my favorite!!

I’ve also been a bookworm since I can remember. I haven’t read any of these books, but they seem to be quite interesting. I’ll give them a try together with a good cup of coffee. 🙂

A cup of coffee and a great book are two of my favorite things! Do you have any favorite books you can recommend? I’m about to finish All the Wonderful and Ugly Things and I’m looking for another awesome read!

I used to love to read, but it seems the past couple of years I’ve not been able to really get into most books and finish them. I recently picked up Pretty Revenge by Emily Liebert and got sucked in. I wouldn’t say it was the greatest book I read, but it was nice to enjoy a story and keep wanted to find out how everything ended.

Books that suck you in like that are total treasures, and I’m always on the hunt for them. If you liked Pretty Revenge, definitely check out The Secret Life of Ceecee Wilkes. It’s sooo good!
