Reviewing my 2021 Sephora Sale Purchases

May 12, 2021

When the Sephora sale hit, I went directly to the store in the first day or two of the sale, but as more people started to share their finds I realized I had a lot more to try out. So here's a brief breakdown of all my purchases and a quick rating from me on each of them.

KORA Organics Turmeric Glow Moisturizer

I find that they spent a lot of time on the packaging, and while it is unique it is not recyclable and seems a bit wasteful in general. The formulation is medium, not too thick and not thin, but it doesn't give me the glow I was expecting from the description and name of the moisturizer 3.5/5

Wishful Yo Detox Face & Body Enzyme Scrub

After trying the rose oil a few months ago, I was turned off by this brand because something about the smell of that oil really triggered me in a bad way. But after so many glowing recommendations, I had to test a few more products and I snagged this scrub. It's gentle enough for the face, but can be used for the body. I personally don't use this for my body (I have sugar scrubs and more intense scrubs for that) but I like how this has a little grit but it's not abrasive on the skin. 4/5

KNC Beauty Lip scrub

I can't tell you how many times I've looked around the bathroom and wanted a lip scrub. For some reason, I never seem to have one on deck which is so ironic when smooth and hydrated lips are necessary for a lot of creamy and glossy lip products. KNC kept popping up and I decided to give this a go. I love how it's super hydrating and the creaminess sticks to the lips, but they are ultra smooth after using this scrub mixed with this rubber tool provided 4.5/5

iNNBEAUTY PROJECT Slushy Serum Moisturizer Crush Infused with Bakuchiol

You know exactly why this product ended up in my cart. Bakuchiol. Plant based retinol alternative that's less abrasive to the skin, but has similar anti aging benefits. This is very light and absorbs into the skin quickly. It gives a mini glow, but really have a nice application to the skin while keeping it hydrated. 4.5/5

Dr. Lara Devgan Scientific Beauty Microdermabrasion Scrub

Clearly I went in with the scrubs and exfoliating products this time, and I think it's because the transition into the brutal hot summer here requires a lot of exfoliating and clearing up skin and particles on the top layer of skin. Dr. Lara Devgan is completely new to me but I'm going to dive further into the brand because this exfoliating treatment is out of this world. It feels professional, it feels medical grade and it doesn't have the hefty price tag but also has a great feel on the skin. On days I use this treatment, my skin has a little extra oomph, shine and just feels more supple and soft. If you're looking for one exfoliating treatment, this is hands down it 5/5

Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Blush Stick

While this color is a bit too rouge for me, it is definitely the creamiest blush formulation and lasts throughout the day. It melts into the skin so beautifully, and looks really natural. The color payoff is really something else on this 4.5/5

KNC Beauty Lip Balm

When it came to KNC again, I knew their scrub and balm were supposed to be equally good but I wasn't as impressed by this balm. I think it's because I like the Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask, because it's buttery but thick (almost like Vaseline or Aquaphor) and I didn't find that balmy feeling to this balm in particular 2.5/5

LANEIGE Lip Treatment Balm

We love a little innovation, and this brush insertion into the lip balm is so nice. That way you don't need to incorporate your grimy little fingers into the balm, and you can just incorporate the brush. I also love the creaminess of this lip balm, but it gives such a nice sheen too so this is a win for me 4.5/5

Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Discovery Eyeshadow Palette

A gorgeous array of colors, and truly great pigmentation. When I run my fingers over these powders, they really dissolve into the lids. Creamy, highly pigmented and long-lasting 4.5/5

PINK Ingleton MD Complexion Brightening Booster Serum

When it comes to giving the skin a gorgeous glow, and a boost of hydration, this is a great serum to add into your routine. In particular, the AM routine. I'm new to Ingleton MD, but I have to say the pigment in this product was really something else! 4.5/5

Westman Workshop Vital Skin Foundation Stick

A creamy foundation that glides on the skin, looks natural and lasts all day. Could it really be? I've always been hesitant about foundation sticks because of the germ factor (you really have to think about applying it to clean skin every time to maintain the cleanliness of the stick especially if you don't use foundation that often.) My big tip here is to use some kind of wipe, whether it's a paper towel or sanitizer method, just to make sure you don't let bacteria and germs live there for an extended period of time but this formulation is a complete home run from my perspective 5/5

LAWLESS Summer Skin Velvet Matte Bronzer

I was a huge LAWLESS fan a few years ago, and was around when Annie's brand was just starting out. Testing some fo the foundations out of the gate, I had noticed a bit of oxidation but then it was fixed in the next batch so I do think my love for the brand goes back a few years but I haven't been using a lot of their latest and greatest, so I snagged this bronzer which is a major hitter with summer approaching. The shade of this bronzer is so gorgeous for a little contouring situation, but also a nice natural bronze to the cheeks. Since most foundation doesn't really match me perfectly, this bronzer makes it so all the lighter shades work just fine, and it really gives a beautiful sun-kissed glow 4.5/5

Fable & Mane HoliRoots™ Pre-wash Hair Treatment Oil

When I say I've been testing every possible thing for hair growth, hair health and hair everything, I mean every possible thing. It is something I've been focusing on for almost two years now, and there's no snake oil liquid collagen nonsense here (with no real quality collagen in it either). This pre-wash hair oil treatment called to me because I've been learning more about hair oils that help your scalp soak in the nutrients for an extended period, in order to feed your hair follicles the nutrients they need to either help hair grow back or keep the follicles healthy. After using this treatment multiple times, the areas I focused this on have definitely been flourishing. It's true you can mix a few oils together to make your own concoction but I personally don't want to be a chemist making my own formulations and this is an easy (and effective mix) 4.5/5

SUNDAY RILEY Light Hearted Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Daily Face

SPF is a must, yearround, but especially in the summer as we spend more time outdoors and on vacations. The unique element that attracted me to this sunscreen is blue light defense on top of the sun protection, and also the velvety finish. While it is a nice formulation, it didn't completely wow me but the antioxidants, finish and the innovation really speak to me as a multitasking product so it's an add to cart moment again and again 4/5

goop GOOPGLOW Glow Lotion

This seems to glide into the skin beautifully and really give a lot of hydration, without being greasy or sticky. While it adds a bit of glow to the skin, it does seem a bit shiny which isn't ideal (I had to do some midday powdering to get rid of a bit of the shine.) Nonetheless it is soft on the skin and doesn't clog the pores 3.5/5

Augustinus Bader The Cream Cleansing Gel with TFC8® Gentle Cleanser

While a few of the Augustinus Bader products haven't been that impressive, this one is a 5/5 without a doubt. Such a fantastic cleanser. Gentle on the skin (not abrasive) but gives a nice hydrating feel while also removing the toughest of makeup. I always love being surprised by a cleanser that doesn't say it's a makeup remover or it'll get rid of the waterproof mascara because then it's just a nice surprise 5/5

Iconic London Lip Plumping Gloss

While this is a nice creamy gloss, it doesn't really give any sort of a plumping effect for me personally. Nothing like the Too Faced lip line which really gives you that bang of plumpness, or even Buxom. The tingly element of both of those glosses gives you that va-va-voom element when it comes to the lip products. It's good for the hydration and the finish, but it's not earth shattering 3.5/5

In-Store Purchases

Josie Maran Argan Matchmaker Serum Foundation

After looking at the Sephora site now, it doesn't look like this product can be shipped to the United States any longer which is very interesting. Having said that, this is a very interesting product because it is not as oily and greasy as some of the other tinted serum foundations. It has a very lightweight feel, and it appears to be more translucent than anything else but I do find it covers a small percentage of the redness on my skin. While it's not the higher coverage I would be looking for with a BB or CC cream, it definitely does give your skin a little dazzle while keeping it looking natural 4/5

Kaja Beauty Bento Bouncy Shimmer Eyeshadow Trio

I have to admit I'm not a big matte shadow girl, but these little trios tricked me and I decided to grab one and see what the pigmentation of everything was like. Seeing the shimmer really piqued my interest, so here we are. Toasted Caramel wasn't in stock in the store, so I grabbed the closest to the warm neutral that I could find, but definitely recommend the pigmentation of these shadows. Not to mention they are travel friendly, long-lasting and very pigmented 5/5

Summer Fridays CC Me Vitamin C Serum

I've been so in awe of the Summer Fridays brand from the get-go because I think they did a great job with the jet lag mask, the marketing and everything they've done since day one. It's important for me not to look at any of the brands with rose-colored glasses, so I'll be frank. This vitamin C is good, but it doesn't compare or come close to Skinceuticals, PCA Skin, DermaDoctor or any other medical grade vitamin C I've loved over the years. As a beginning vitamin C (whether you're new to vit c or younger) I think this is a great one but for someone like me using 20% Skinceuticals typically, it doesn't have the same effect 3/5

FENTY BEAUTY by Rihanna Eaze Drop Blurring Skin Tint

Let me tell you, it was a miracle I was able to find my shade because these sold out like hotcakes. Most shades were missing, but somehow there was one left in the closest one I could find to my own, so I snagged it. Light coverage 5/5

Wishful Honey Balm Niacinamide Moisturizer

Hands down, the most magical and glowing moisturizer I've ever used. This is a run and put it in your cart, either online or in store because you need this hydration in your life immediately 5/5

Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm

When I say I am a fan of rich buttery lip balms, I can tell you this is the perfect formulation and consistency of exactly that. I want a lip balm that makes my lips feel like they have Vaseline but with a light scent. If I apply this at night, I wake up and my lips are still hydrated. Must have in your purse and on the nightstand 5/5

FENTY BEAUTY by Rihanna Match Stix Shimmer Skinstick

I wasn't planning on buying 2 new items from FENTY BEAUTY but here we are. This is even better than the skin tint, and what a gorgeous blush and highlight duo in one. Creamy, glides on the skin beautifully and in the shade Yacht Lyfe, it is just absolute perfection for summertime.

JLo Beauty That JLo Glow 4-Piece Kit

After hearing all the hype around JLo's line, I knew I wanted to try a product or two. Initially I was just going to grab the serum or the booster, but when I saw this kit I knew it was going to give me a better idea of the brand as a whole because it came with the essentials. Unfortunately I felt as if the cleanser and moisturizer were perfumey, and had fragrance, which is not ideal for everyday. It also seemed like the moisturizer was trying to be a mix of Nivea and La Mer (Nivea was my mom's favorite growing up so that smell and formulation is forever engrained in my mind.) The scents really turned me off, and the booster was a bit potent in terms of the color as it's not subtle so for me the brand is okay but at this point, I wouldn't repurchase 2.5/5

Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté Shine Lipstick Balm

A classic. This is such a creamy, high quality lipstick with the most beautiful packaging. There is nothing more luxurious and inviting than a YSL gold lipstick tube. While the packaging is gorgeous, the formulation does not disappoint. The shine and color payoff is so perfect, and another complete win for me 5/5

Were any of these in your Sephora cart too?

I love reading your reviews bc I know you will tell it like it is. I have taken note of quite a few of your picks. I was very interested in your review of J Lo’s products, I would have thought she would have been a little more careful with her addition of fragrance, it’s a trigger for a lot of people. At least it gives me an idea of what to avoid. Looking forward to some more reading!

What a fantastic breakdown of all of these products! It’s been ages since I’ve really shopped for any beauty products outside of my go-tos, but you’re inspiring me to try some new items soon. I appreciated how you gave detailed explanations about each product and what you liked and disliked. I certainly trust your judgment! It’s really awesome that the majority of the products got higher ratings. When you’ve purchased so many thing, it’s such a great feeling when most of them work out!
