What’s Next for Me with the #BlackLivesMatter Movement?

June 8, 2020

What I've Done As Of 6/8/20

  1. Audrey, from Annotated Audrey, and I have decided we are donating 100% of the proceeds of our sticker pack to the BLM (Black Lives Matter.) If you purchase 1 sticker at $3, or the entire pack at $8, all of that money will go to our BLM organization of choosing.

  2. I wrote a detailed blog post all about local Tucson black owned businesses. You can read that here for reference.

  3. After finding out Sephora allowed for monetary donations with the use of points, I donated all of my points to the National Black Justice Coalition. If you have points, this is a super easy way to get involved.

  4. Grassroots Law Project has been my main organization to show support during this time period, both monetarily but also on social. They're led by Shaun King, who is such an admirable activist, but he is working all hours of the day and night to get us the content and coverage we need within all cities in the US. Essentially what the media doesn't want us to see and all the things they're not covering. Not to mention his audience can find some of the vile people of the internet in just a few moments (quite impressive actually.)

  5. As I see injustice happen day to day, I will be calling it out. For those of you unaware of the scenario with AZ Foothills Magazine, a few of my girlfriends and I saw the nasty things the owner's wife had said online and we shared to a larger audience to ensure other businesses knew they have to take a stand against the magazine. Their apologies were horrendous, and so far most of the business partners they had, have spoken out against them.

What I Will Continuing Doing After 6/8/20

  1. My biggest contribution to the black community, long term, will be my time and social media expertise. If you caught it in one of my Instagram posts, I am reaching out to various local black owned Tucson businesses to discuss helping them with their social media efforts. This will consist of a social media audit first and foremost, and then I will prepare recommendations and a strategy plan depending on the goals the business has for themselves.

  2. I will continue to amplify the voices and content of the black community, now and long term. I've always loved sharing some of my favorite people on an ongoing basis but I will make a conscious effort to amplify my black girlfriends in the influencer space, and continue to help as much as I can.

  3. As times change and shift, I will do my best to find new ways to incorporate the black community into my content and into my life. For example, when we do takeout a few times a week, I'll try to find a black owned business to support.

I'm looking forward to seeing efforts continue beyond last week. In order to make long term change, we have to continue making conscious efforts every day.

Aww I love this, Ada! I’m doing a lot of the same things! And I agree that it’s not really about what we do NOW but rather what we continue to do moving forward. Also thanks for bringing to light that Arizona magazine fiasco – I can’t believe that! I had no idea about the Sephora points either. I’ll use mine to donate!

It’s good to see that you’re taking action. The most important thing is that we’re not just posting about it online, but actually doing something now and in the future. It’s especially awesome that the proceeds from the sticker packs will go towards necessary associations.

It honestly warms my heart to see people pledging in writing to do more moving forward. 2020 has been a rough year, with police brutality and overt racism being a huge part of that. I’m very hopeful seeing everyone stepping up right now means we will see some lasting growth and change as a society. I’m hopeful we’ll look back on 2020 not thinking it was an awful year but a year society really grew and changed!

I appreciate this post and I’m hopeful that as more people commit, the necessary change will happen. Thank you for this! xoxo, Sarah
